Kylena Parks has been praised for her voice’s “rare beauty, growing more beautiful in the upper register” as well as her “commanding stage presence” (The Baltimore Sun). Kylena joins Annapolis Opera in Fall 2018 as Berta in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, and in July joins Charlottesville Opera as an Apprentice Artist. Recently, Kylena has been awarded 1st Prize in the Annapolis Opera Competition as well as Grand Prize at the Musical Merit Competition of Greater San Diego. Previously, Kylena sang Despina (Così fan tutte) with Old Towne Opera.
Kylena holds a Masters of Music degree in Opera Performance from University of Maryland College Park where she had the privilege of studying under Delores Ziegler. While at UMD, Kylena performed Blanche in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, Vitellia in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, and premiered the role of Avarice in Martin Hennessy’s new opera The Young King. Additionally, her studies at UMD included two years of intense movement, acting, and stage combat training.
